Rice Survivor (RS4)

Objective of the Rice Survivor training:
  • To provide members of the IRRI community an opportunity to have a hands-on, seed to seed, rice production experience.
Brief description:
  • Full season rice production training
  • Teams of 5-6 people from different disciplines deciding together on production decisions
  • Minimal scheduled class time of 1-2 hrs per week
  • Gain first-hand experience dealing with challenges of rice production
Topics covered:
  • Farm planning – crop calendar;
  • Variety selection & quality seed
  • Land preparation
  • Nursery preparation
  • Crop establishment
  • Water management
  • Nutrient management
  • Weed management
  • Pest and disease management
  • Crop diagnosis
  • Harvest
  • Milling
  • Economic and sustainability assessment
Expected outputs:
  • Increased knowledge and  skills in various aspects of rice production
  • Experience with various challenges of rice production
  • Some participants will have better understanding about how their role at the institute fits into the context of rice research and production
  • Others participants can better appreciate the challenge of IRRI’s task to increase rice productivity
  • Familiarity with IRRI ICT products including RKB, Rice Doctor, and Rice Crop Manager
Costs:
  • $50 participant fee for the 6 month course including 2-3 hours per week for training sessions and field activities
  • IRRI covers a significant portion of the training costs with E.S. covering the field production costs and the Training Center subsidizing a portion of the training costs
